Passing On The Gift Of Writing: Montblanc Pens A New Chapter In Its Partnership With UNICEF

As the physical manifestation of the spoken language, the written word is one of the core pillars of human civilization. With its foundations in the culture of writing, it is Montblanc’s belief that the written word is a precious gift that should be bestowed on every human being. However, while education is widely recognized as a fundamental human right, of the 650 million primary school-age children, approximately 59 million are out of school. Furthermore, another 92 million children do not reach fourth grade and, of those that do, 130 million still have not learned the basics of reading and numeracy. Understanding that education and words have the power to change the world by helping to break generational cycles of poverty and disease, Montblanc has been collaborating with UNICEF over the past 13 years, raising over $10 million dollars that have benefitted education programmes around the world. Just like UNICEF, Montblanc is committed to helping all children regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic background, realize their right to equitable and inclusive quality education. The new launch of the Montblanc for UNICEF collection of limited edition writing instruments, timepieces, accessories and leather goods is the latest chapter in the story of this special partnership that has helped thousands of children find their way to a quality education, and a brighter future.

To highlight the universal nature of writing, the diversity of world languages is represented in the design of the new collection by six handwritten characters. Each one of the characters is the first letter from six different alphabets that children learn to write first, including Roman, Hindi, Arabic and three Asian characters. Each item from the Writing Is A Gift Collection sold between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018 raises the amount that will be donated towards providing more children access to primary education of a better quality.

Improving learning conditions for over 5 million children

“There is still much to be done to ensure that every child around the world has proper access to an education, a cause Montblanc has been proud to champion for the past 13 years,” explains Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc CEO. “This new initiative gives individuals who are as passionate as we are about the written word the ability to own a Montblanc piece that carries true purpose, and by doing so, making a valuable contribution to the work of UNICEF in communities around the world where children are not always given the opportunity to learn to read and write. Writing is indeed a special gift that every child should enjoy.”

Montblanc, through its partnership with UNICEF, aims to help improve learning for over 5 million children. While more children are going to schools, millions of students still do not learn the basics. UNICEF advocates and programs for quality education and improved learning outcomes in countries around the world. The funds raised by the initiative will help UNICEF to support national education quality standards that cover pedagogy, reading and writing, the learning environment, community involvement, infrastructure and measuring of learning outcomes. In addition, funds will go towards teacher training programmes, as well as guidance and tools to ensure teachers have the knowledge necessary to deliver quality education to students.

At a country level, Montblanc funds will contribute to, for example learning and teaching training materials, supporting child friendly schools in China and focusing on rights of Equal Education. In Brazil, Montblanc’s contribution will help UNICEF reach its goal to ensure that children aged 4 to 17 have access to basic education and that teachers and school managers have developed capacities for quality education in order to decrease the dropout rates of the most disadvantaged boys and girls.  UNICEF is working with Government and partners to ensure that every child and adolescent has full access to the educational system – and on the quality of the education offered to them.  In Djibouti, Montblanc will support UNICEF’s efforts in terms of supporting the capacity of the educational system, catering to the most disadvantaged children in the country. The collaboration with UNICEF began in 2004 with “Sign Up For The Right To Write” initiative, when the Maison raised funds through the sale of a limited edition of 4,810 pens and invited 149 celebrities and public figures to take part in a global campaign revealing their thoughts on the value and importance of writing. In 2007, Montblanc followed up with the “Power to Write” campaign, supporting UNICEF education programmes through the sale of a special edition writing instrument.  Renewing its commitment toward the common goal of ending child illiteracy, the “Signature For Good” initiative between 2009 and 2010 benefitted the UNICEF education programs in Asia and Latin America, as well as UNICEF’s “Schools for Africa” initiative, a joint initiative established in 2004 by UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to promote education for all children in Africa. In 2013, Montblanc renewed the “Signature for Good” initiative with a collection of writing instruments, leather pieces and jewellery featuring a brick design that symbolized the joint effort of building a better future for all children and their communities by improving access to quality education, including the construction of schools, one brick at a time. Funds raised supported UNICEF’s focusing on the most vulnerable children through its Schools for Africa and Asia initiatives, and programmes in Latin America.

The impact of more than 10 million USD raised since 2004 to benefit UNICEF’s programmes can be witnessed on the ground in many countries, where more children are finding their way to a better education.
